History of Chi Alpha Epsilon
Chi Alpha Epsilon was organized and founded in 1989 at the West Chester University of Pennsylvania. Responding to an increased need to acknowledge the continuing successes of students in academic development programs and recognizing that students who share similar experiences could serve as significant role models for others, a Greek letter honor society was proposed by Doctor Elbert Saddler. A university psychologist and counseling coordinator for the ACT 101 Program, Doctor Elbert Saddler identified eligible students and alumni to form the nucleus of XAE's founding members. Directors of Student Support Services Programs, McNair Scholars Programs, Educational Opportunity Programs, and other academic developmental programs at many colleges and universities have hailed its formation. The National Association for Developmental Education has officially endorsed Chi Alpha Epsilon as an honor society for developmental education students. The Council for Opportunity in Education is also encouraging participation. History of the Beta Epsilon Chapter Dr. Elbert M. Saddler founded Chi Alpha Epsilon at West Chester University of Pennsylvania in 1990. In 1995, Chi Alpha Epsilon was adopted as the honor society for developmental program students in Pennsylvania. The society was introduced to New York State at the bi-annual Tri-State Conference in 1997. On October 27th, 2000, the Educational Opportunity Program at Buffalo State College chartered a local chapter of Chi Alpha Epsilon along with the Educational Development Program at SUNY Fredonia and the Access Opportunity Program at SUNY Geneseo. Dr. Saddler came to WNY and presided over the induction, and pinning ceremony at Buffalo State College, as well at Fredonia and Geneseo. The primary goal of Chi Alpha Epsilon is to recognize academic excellence, and the Educational Opportunity Program began with recognizing twenty-four charter members into the society. The Beta Epsilon Chapter at Buffalo State College encourages students to fulfill the purpose of Chi Alpha Epsilon, which is to “promote continued high standards, foster increased communication among its members, and honor the academic excellence of those students admitted to college via developmental program pathways.” Our induction ceremony is held during the fall semester, and during the spring semester we highlight our inductees' accomplishments at our annual Honors Convocation. The Beta Epsilon Chapter encourages highly-motivated students with a desire to maintain academic excellence to consider joining our society. For more information, contact us!
